Support Dogs receives many enquiries from individuals wishing to work at the charity. Whilst vacancies are rare, they do arise occasionally and all current vacancies are always posted on our website so please check back regularly.

 

Current Vacancy

Job Description

 

Title:

Assistance Dog Trainer

 

Salary:

Starting salary per annum; £12k

 

Purpose of job:

To provide structured training and maintain the health and welfare of the dogs in accordance with the objectives of the Charity.

 

Responsible to:

Head of Training

 

Specific Duties:

To assist the Training Department in the following area’s;

Evaluation and interview of prospective foster carers.

Home assessment of prospective foster carer.

Placement and regular monitoring of dog in foster care.

Selection and assessment of potential Assistance Dogs.

Structured training for selected dogs.

Compiling written training reports.

Training the dogs relevant obedience commands, social skills and task work.

Specialised one to one training of dogs in the programme.

Follow up training as requested.

Maintain and monitor health and welfare of dogs in training.

Responding to general training, behavioural and basic medical enquires from foster carers and giving advice where appropriate.

Assisting the day to day administration of the Training Department.

Attending specific events which will involve flexible working hours e.g. evenings and weekends.

To share on call duties as required.

Any other duty as required by the Management Committee.

 

Essential Qualities:

Previous dog training and/or behaviour experience.

Natural rapport with dogs.

Excellent communication skills with people.

Understanding the importance of confidentiality.

The ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision.

To be able to prioritise work and use effective time management.

Team player.

Full clean driving licence.

Computer literate.

Preferred qualifications but not essential as full training will be provided:

Animal Psychology and Behavioural qualifications.

Disability awareness.

Work Placements
We are occasionally able to offer work experience placements however these are extremely limited and in high demand. Successful placements will be expected to spend time working in all departments including fundraising and administration.
